Do it. It's peaceable protest against an immoral government action.
Property tax is extortion.

It doesn't matter if there's some statute in place about undue burden handling money: $600 is like five minutes *by hand*. It's an FU that is *not* impossible to process, which would be the only reasonable grounds to gripe.

Woah. Not just in dollar bills, but in bills folded so tightly it took them 6 minutes to unfold each bill? I'd call that disruptive. If his goal was to be an asshole, he succeeded.

You pay $6200 in property tax on a 162k house? Where the hell do you live? And I thought Ozaukee County Wisconsin was high!!

The link says he was arrested for 'refusing to leave the county courthouse', not for paying in $1 bills. His being asked to leave does stem from paying in such a way as to make each bill difficult to count, but it doesn't say he was asked to take to money with him and leave the tax charge outstanding. Trying to escape the deputy was also a bad move on top of a bad move.
You occasionally hear stories about people paying this or that entity in ways that make life harder for the recipient, but the entities in question usually aren't a branch of government with quick access to law enforcement. There might be more to the story than presented here, but it's hard for me to feel sorry for someone making one poor desicion after another. He clearly had the money; it was probably better for him to drop the currency off at the tax collector and move on with his life.

If you have to pay annually for the right to own something, you don't really own it.

yeah, something I literally own, not a fucking bank. But the city can damn sure take my house and land if I dont pay the taxes. my property straddles the town line too, if mine was right over the line it would be 1/3 of that, with better schools and trash collection (we pay 10$ for 5 bags to get them picked up), roads that don't eat your car, etc. Oh now I am riled

He was clearly very pissed off. Pissed off people doubt the motives of others. I presume the reason he stuck around was to *make sure* that the money was entered and did not then suffer an "oopsie" or have a couple of bills conveniently go missing. Did that then give them a cromulent mechanism to get him arrested? Possibly. I'd assume he also probably didn't think the cop arresting him was genuine - after all, he's not loitering, he's there as regards official business, right? It's fun sometimes to get in the head of somebody like this.

You should have your property surveyed, if any part of it is over the county line, move your entrance to that spot. It's worth a try if you can get some tax relief.

I bet the rental of a bulldozer and roller is probably less than $4k... Even if you have to drop $6k building a dirt road, you'd see that and then some on the back end. This is all depending on if you have the cash on hand. Also I'm not a lawyer so I'd suggest checking with a local one to see if you could legally get away with it.

I did, the way the property lies I would have to exit through my neighbors yard, because the boundry is on protected land. Def been down that road with a good legal team. No dice

That was good protest on the guy.
But man, $6200? My property taxes are about $1200ish per year, in addition to homeowner's insurance being approximately the same. I pay $200 a month into an escrow account so that it's all paid on time. But, reading your posts, you paid a whole lot more for your house. I just bought my house over the summer, and it'll be paid off within 5 years, and I'm paying about $35k with no interest. I hope for what you're (unfairly, since you own your house outright) paying, that you have a nice house with plenty of room. I hate having to pay tax, I really do. I pay taxes on every paycheck that I earn. I pay taxes on my material items. I pay taxes on food. We all do, for the most part. And then they expect us to pay taxes on something that already belongs to us. Especially something that we have paid a lot of money for, to work towards paying off. Paying off a house generally takes anywhere from 10-30 years for the average person, yet you still have that property tax shadow hanging over your head, and should something happen, that you can't pay it, your own property is stolen right out from under you.
I'm sorry, I understand taxes are a necessary evil, but to make you pay them on something that rightfully belongs to you, that you worked your butt off for, that just does not fly with me.

I wish, the old lady wont sell, and for some reason, now hates me. Even though I took the shithole next door (that she used to live in, her dead husbands gramma built the place) and made it nice. Her kids fucking suck and they are all getting their say in because they are "looking out for their mom" even though they come visit her one every other year. I used to bring her fresh eggs!

they are separating the storm drain from the septic in the city (septic that I am not a part of of course, I own my shit:) ) so they are calculating the size of your roof and driveway to assess the tax based on how much rain your place sheds into the storm drains, sorta because my rain runs onto my grass.

Fellow "homeowner" with ridiculous property taxes here as well.....
The older I get, the more I realize the fact that one does not truly own anything considered tangible property.

It's not a new debate. Jefferson and Franklin considered the right to property a social contract, rather than an inherent right, which is why "life, liberty, and the pursuit of property" never made it to the final draft of the Declaration.
I am of a different opinion.

Of all taxes to be upset about, property tax makes the least sense. It's equitable, as everyone pays according to the value of real property and land that they own, and it's opt-in. If you don't like it, you don't purchase land, and you don't pay. Ever. Plus, in most jurisdictions, it's the primary source of funding for education and other public goods like police and fire, thus it actively supports the health of society. For an example of what happens when no one owns property and therefore doesn't pay property tax, look at the funding problems for police and education in Detroit. Some states get by without it, but they have to make up other ways, and those other ways are often LESS fair, like higher income taxes and higher sales taxes (which are highly regressive). So ultimately, yes they're annoying (I know, I pay my own 4k/year), but very necessary.

Well, I'm not talking about where they're going . I'm talking about where they come from , and if the ends justify the means. It's this general idea that property ownership is a privilege granted to us by the government. And it's not just for land. Here in MO we have to pay property taxes on our cars, and we're supposed to report other valuables, too, though I don't think many people do.

That is a horseshit way to do things. They don't believe in selling bonds or passing temporary millages? I'd pay them in dollar bills. Just walk in and make it rain dollar bills. What's the worst that could happen?
